Q&A
Can I move into an
apartment after a couple of weeks with the host
family?
Yes you can, and we
actually encourage it. Learn about how a family
lives in New Zealand then apply it to your own
space.
How long can we
stay in New Zealand on this program?
Most nationalities can stay for up to 3 months
with special visas. Its best to check with your
nearest New Zealand Embassy.
Its a little
concerning to take my child into a new foreign
environment. Is it safe?
New Zealand is safe and
with the assistance of our coordinators, you
will be introduced to a family and school in a
peaceful neighbourhood. You and your child will
soon adapt to the new environment.
The Oyako program is designed for mothers or fathers and children aged 3 to 12, to stay with a New Zealand family with children of similar ages.
During the stay, the child is enrolled in a local Childcare Center, Primary School, or Intermediate School.
While junior is at school, the mothers or father has a variety of options. At first she will see that her child is fitting in OK at school. She may wish to stay close to the classroom for the first few days depending on how well her child adapts to the new surroundings.
Parent options are include:
- Volunteer at the School or Daycare Center as a helper.
- Take a short course at an institute. E.g. English language, art, golf, and scuba diving.
- No special arrangements - open plan stay..

Important Points
- It is recommended for families to
stay for 2-4 weeks.
(Longer periods are possible but accommodation will be arranged in an apartment - Children on the program must aged 3-12 years.
- Daycare Centre - for children 3-5 years old.
- Elementary School - for children 5-10 years old.
- Intermediate School - for children 10-12 years old.
- That the visiting parent and child/children are matched with a family of similar aged children.
- The child attends the same child care centre or primary school as the host family child/children.
- On the first day of school the local coordinator will introduce the mother and child to the school, teachers and staff.
